I'll admit l hadn't given the subject much thought in the past, but l was reading earlier today about how water molecules change when turning into ice (as you do). This graphic then helped give me a visual understanding. The water molecules on the right are turning into ice (on the left). The molecule change makes the hexagon shape shown, creating more space. This represents how the ice takes up more space, and is also lighter, due to the gaps. Probably known to many already, but news to me. Every day is a learning day.
