At one time footballers were men of the people and lived alongside their fans, probably buying a pub after they retire. I do think they should have been paid a lot more years ago, as it's such a short career, and there was a lot of money floating about, but it's also heartwarming to see the likes of the great Dixie (60 goals in a season) Dean of Everton pulling pints in his pub, The Dublin Packet in Cheshire, 1950. It's apparently still called 'Dixies' bye the older folk around there.
