boys from the liverpool slums 1956 by thurston hopkins

Thurston Hopkins took this (and other) photographs for a feature about Liverpool slums in 1956 for The Picture Post that were not published at the time, as city politicians thought it would give a bad impression of the city. I think the lads look pretty smart considering how poor they probably were, and a short time before then, their forefathers would probably have been walking around barefooted. They could also be mates of my uncle Ray.

With thanxs to Colin Smith.

And here's some more from the same series.
