Despite Reform 'Throwing everything at it', Plaid Cymru thankfully won the Caerphilly by election, while also giving a huge kick up the backside to Labour, who lost a seat they had held for over 100 years. Rather predictably, Reform (who had been tipped to win and backed by most of the press) received most of the attention following their defeat, with interviews galore and articles saying how well they had done, but in this brave new world that is to be expected. The main issue l am bothered about is how Labour react. The reason they kept seats like this is because of the Labour values of fairness and fighting for the less fortunate in our society. The more they try to pander to the right and appease Reform voters, the whole point of voting Labour disappears, so despairing voters may desert and go to Reform, and some will do if the policies are similar and they are bombarded by articles in the right wing press to do so, such as in this by election. On the other hand, most will flee Labour and head for parties that are not Reform or The Tories, such as Plaid Cymru in this case, or Liberal / Green in future elections, who at present are being more Labour than Labour themselves, and l speak as a (disappointed) Labour supporter. Let's hope they now see the light and come out fighting with a left wing agenda, make sure they get their message across, and call out the racism and lies behind the opposition on the right. However, l'm not holding my breath.
